Origins & Early Settlement

Andover was platted in 1886 and incorporated as a town in 1910. Nestled in Clinton County in eastern Iowa, the city sits at an elevation of 728 feet along the rolling farmland that defines this corner of the state.

The town was named by a railroad official after Andover, Vermont — a nod to the New England heritage many early Iowa settlers carried westward. The Chicago & North Western Railway played a central role in connecting Andover to the broader region, bringing commerce and community to the young settlement.

By 1920 the population had grown to 83 residents, reflecting the steady optimism of a farming community finding its footing on the Iowa prairie. Families put down roots, built homes, and established the close-knit character that defines Andover to this day.

A Community Built to Last

Through the decades, Andover has remained a tight-knit rural community. Clinton County's rich agricultural heritage surrounds the city — corn and soybean fields stretch to the horizon, and the rhythms of planting and harvest still shape daily life.

The Northeast Community School District has long served Andover families, providing education and a gathering point for generations of local children. Neighbors have always looked out for one another here — that spirit of mutual care is woven into the fabric of the city.

As of the 2020 census, Andover is home to 109 residents across 46 households and businesses. Small in size, but strong in pride — this is a community that knows its neighbors by name.

Andover's Annual Labor Day Weekend Celebration

Kinderfest

Every Saturday of  Labor Day weekend, Andover comes alive with Kinderfest — a beloved community celebration that brings together residents, families, and friends from across the region for a day of food, fun, and small-town spirit.

This past Labor Day Weekend marked a special milestone: after a hiatus of several years, Kinderfest returned to Andover — and it came back bigger and better than ever. The community turned out in force, filling the streets with laughter, music, and the kind of warmth that only a small town can offer. By every measure, it was a tremendous success.

The energy and enthusiasm from this year's celebration have set the stage for an even more spectacular Kinderfest next year. Plans are already underway, and the whole community is looking forward to making it a tradition that grows stronger every Labor Day weekend.
